The Digital Challenge initiative is a competition aimed at UK councils to encourage them to think about issues of social and digital exclusion within communities. According to Digital Challenge and Inclusion Network (DCIN) Content Editor, has been created to support the Digital Challenge initiative.

Out of 80 entrants, 10 finalists have been shortlisted, including Birmingham (as lead authority), Bristol City, Ealing, Kingston upon Hull, Manchester City, Milton Keynes, Norfolk County, Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils, Shropshire County, Stratford-on-Avon District and Sunderland City.

The Digital Challenge and Inclusion Network also has a wider objective to deepen the debate surrounding the issue of digital and social exclusion and to act as a focal point for knowledge sharing, promoting innovation and serving as a call to action.

  • to establish a repository of monitored and evaluated digital initiatives which address issues of social exclusion
  • to develop a portal/interactive forum as a place to go to get questions and queries answered and a place where a community of service providers and users will be able to share ideas and create open source, user-driven innovations
  • to support industry on the development of new innovations and the spread of good solutions
  • to work with the Third Sector to ensure grassroots activity and local join-up through community development approaches, such as “Silversurfers” days, and EverybodyOnline
