Interview: “The current discussion on ‘smart cities’ is based on a too limited idea of what a city is”
Martijn de Waal, Director of The Public Matters, talks about how current ‘smart city’ research conceptualizes the city mainly as a bunch of infrastructure to be managed as efficiently as possible, understimating the complexity of urban life and public spaces.
Funding Smart City Projects has been recently set at the centre of the interest of many urban analysts. IBM’s executive Rick Robinson, in his two sequential posts, lists ten ways to pay for Smart City initiatives.
A two-day conference, titled:“IN SEARCH OF INNOVATION – How can knowledge exchange practices within University City Regions stimulate regional development?”, will take place on 11th & 12th of October 2012, coordinated by the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia – Thrace (DAMT), within the framework of the INTERREG IVC project “INNOPOLIS”.
Warren Karlenzig, President of Common Current, a company which is working on urban sustainability master planning and similar issues, spoke at TEDx Mission on how cities are using collective intelligence approaches to address climate change and climate change adaptation.
Following the Kickstarter’s success in funding creative projects, a number of civic crowdfunding platforms has been launched in order to help people invest in places and civic projects they care about. These platforms take the current trend of crowdfunding and apply it to community-centric projects helping cities to “kickstart” urban innovation.
