India has an ongoing Smart City program, launched in June 2015, which seeks to create 100 Smart Cities! This will be done by modernizing the municipal services and infrastructure of existing cities, including transportation, water and waste management, and smart grids. Such a transformation will be essential to maintain and improve living standards as more people are expected to migrate to cities in the future.
India is experiencing a digital transformation, with technology-driven projects springing up in different regions, driven in part by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ s Digital India initiative. Oracle, which already has about 38,000 employees in India and is one of the most active technology companies in the country, is rapidly expanding its presence. Last year it signed a memorandum of understanding with the state of Maharashtra, to accelerate the development of smart cities and drive economic growth in the state. It also announced plans to build a 2.8-million-square-foot campus in Bangalore, launch nine incubation centers in India, and provide computer science training to more than a half million Indian students.
It also organized “Oracle OpenWorld India,’ which took place May 9 and 10 in New Delhi, with the participation of half a dozen of promising Indian startups, some of them early members of the Oracle Startup Cloud Accelerator program started in 2015. During the event, the company showed its growing portfolio of smart city technologies, in areas such as public safety, parking, street lighting, and civic project management, and it alsodemonstrated a smart city control center, still in development, that is designed to provide a real-time view of municipal operations, using Oracle Internet of Things Cloud Service and other Oracle Cloud services. Such private initiatives are supporting the development of India’ s Smart Cities.
