This report represents a renewed national focus on Australian cities, by the national government. Its intention is to focus on the debate and action around the opportunities for cities – metropolitan and regional. The Smart Cities Plan illustrates the Government’ s vision for Australian cities, and the plan for maximizing their potential.
According to this report three main pillars can be recognized as key factors of the development of Smart Cities: Smart Investment, Smart Policy and Smart Technology.
As our economy continues to transition and our knowledge based industries grow, so too do our cities. To respond to this growth, and take advantage of tomorrow’ s economic opportunities, we need to rethink the way our cities are planned, built and managed today. Our economic transition and growth is important, but it can present challenges.
To secure our future prosperity and global competitiveness, all levels of government need to work in partnership to support our cities big and small. To achieve this we need a long term framework’”we need a Smart Cities Plan.
The chapters of this report present a thorough description of the state-of-the-art for Australian cities today; a number of challenges and opportunities that arise through the Smart City context; and some crucial aspects for building the cities of tomorrow.
