The annual conference of Boston Area Research Initiative is starting today, April 30th, under the theme “Building Back Smarter”. The event is fully online and is marking the institute’s 10th anniversary.
This paper introduces an alternative narrative for urban resilience. It attempts to emphasize the value of community and its prospect to create bottom-up, non-capital oriented and non-bureaucratic urban change. In this paper, emphasis is placed on societal issues, by acknowledging the user-generated transformative power in counteracting the mundane systemic pressures, and overcoming global crises (health, economic, climate, etc.) at a local scale.
ClimateOS is a platform created by ClimateView with the aim to support cities with climate action plans towards net-zero emissions. It is a platform addressed to cities, municipalities and regional governments.
This paper investigates a different direction in smart city design and efficiency, based on lessons learned from high impact smart city projects and ecosystems. The authors focus on ‘Connected Intelligence Spaces’ created in smart city ecosystems, which (a) have physical, social, and digital dimensions; (b) work as systems of innovation enabling synergies between human, machine, and collective intelligence; and (c) improve efficiency and performance by innovating rather than optimizing city routines.
Smart cities as large technological systems: Overcoming organizational challenges in smart cities through collective action
This study is researching the non-technological dimensions of smart cities. By reviewing the activities in 8 smart cities from a perspective of large technological systems, the authors argue that many of the challenges and solutions are organizational in nature.
The 16th Archi-DOCT Journal has been published under the theme “Urbanities”. According to the editors, this issues includes a constellation of projects that symbiotically operate to define the future urban environment and respond to multiple crises associated with intertwined issues such as climate change, flooding, land consumption, inequality, gender issues, production processes, and geopolitics.
This paper proposes the use of game engines towards the creation of interactive urban environments and engagement with data. The authors designed and implemented an interactive visualization tool that delivers comprehensive urban data summaries and analytics through a user-friendly interface.
