URENIO is part of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Development in the Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Unit is mainly involved in competitive projects belonging to the European R&D Framework Programme and the innovative actions of the ERDF.

URENIO's work is led by members of the scientific staff and post-graduate students of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Research collaboration has been developed with researchers of the Democritus University of Thrace, the University of Thessaly, the Panteion University, the Technical University of Crete, the University of Social Sciences of Toulouse, the Technical University of Milan, the Catholic University of Louvain, the Research and Technology Institute of Maastricht, the School of Economic Studies of Cardiff, and other European higher education and research institutions.

URENIO's research focuses on cities and regions which base their development on R&D, technological innovation, technology-intensive companies, technology infrastructure, knowledge and information networks. Central research theme is the territories of technological innovation including technology districts, science parks and technopoles, innovating regions and regional innovation strategies, and virtual innovation environment and intelligent cities. We are working on models of innovative areas (districts, technopoles, regions), on models of innovation processes (spin-offs, producer-supplier relations, technology co-operation, new product development), and policies that may be transferred from one region to another.

Members and research associates of URENIO have participated in numerous competitive research projects funded by national and international research institutions and the European Commission. These projects deal with the role of innovation in regional development, the typology and evolution of technology-based cities and regions, and the creation environments supporting technological innovation.
